Chronic Disease Self-Management Education What does this mean?

A new workshop is being offered in our community. Classes are sponsored by Kansas Department of Health and Environment and this is an evidence based program developed by Stanford University. This means this that the workshop has been taught across the United States for a number of years and participants have been studied. The results show that people that attended workshops had better eating habits and increased activity after completing class. Many other health benefits have been proven.

Trained individuals that are certified leaders are the instructors for the 6 week workshop series. One or both leaders usually have a chronic condition themselves. The classes are geared toward individuals with chronic conditions or their caregivers. Information is taught in an interactive format with a book and CD for reference. Some self-management skills that are taught are decision making, improved communication with family or health care provider, symptom management and healthy eating. These are just a few of the areas covered.

Any individual who has a chronic condition such as arthritis, diabetes or depression is encouraged to attend. There is no cost for the workshop, just a commitment of approximately 2 hours a week for 6 weeks to better manage your everyday life. Please consider attending or sharing this information with a loved one.
