A new workshop is being offered in our community: Diabetes Self Management. Classes are sponsored by Kansas Department of Health and Environment and this is an evidence based program developed by Stanford University. This means this that the workshop has been taught across the United States for a number of years and participants have been studied. The results show that people that attended workshops had better eating habits and increased activity after completing class. Many other health benefits have been proven.
Trained individuals that are certified leaders are the instructors for the 6 week workshop series. One or both leaders usually have a chronic condition themselves or live with someone who has. The classes are geared toward individuals with diabetes or their caregivers. Information is taught in an interactive format with a book and CD for reference. This class builds on the self-management skills that are taught in the Chronic Disease Self Management workshop with more in depth information on self managing your diabetes.
Any individual who has diabetes or who lives with someone who has diabetes is encouraged to attend. There is no cost for the workshop, just a commitment of approximately 2 hours a week for 6 weeks to better manage your everyday life. Please consider attending or sharing this information with a loved one.
