Friends Annual Meeting

January 19, 2016 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm America/Chicago Timezone

We are happy to invite you to our Friends Annual meeting on Tuesday, January 19, to be held at the Commercial Bank, 616 N. Penn, at 6:30 P.M. Please enter at the north door, and take the elevator inside to the second floor. Ane Mae’s Coffee and Sandwich House will cater finger food for your enjoyment. We will have a brief business meeting for the election of 2016 officers.
Following the election, a presentation co-sponsored by our Friends and the Kansas Humanities Council will feature Lorraine Madway, the curator of Special Collections and university archivist at Wichita State University Libraries who will present the program on “Kansas Basketball and the 1936 Olympics.” These Olympic Games in Berlin are most remembered for the worldwide political tensions in the early days of Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. Little remembered is that it was also the first time basketball was played as an Olympic sport. The gold-medal U.S. team was composed in large part by Kansans who played on an industrial league team, the Globe Refiners of McPherson. This presentation celebrates the historic connections of basketball in Kansas to the 1936 Olympics and will include a showing of a short KHC-funded documentary from the McPherson perspective, “Oil and Gold: The McPherson Globe Refiners Basketball Story.”
